Newsletter for 27 July 2004

The Dog Days Are On The Way

On Tuesday, 27 July 2004, the Backgammon Club of San Diego met. This will be the last time for July, we promise.

Tournament News

9 people entered a 16-player bracket on Tuesday night. We had the following tournament results:

Main Tournament (16 player bracket)
  • 1st place: Sho Sengoku

  • 2nd place: Osman Guner

  • 3rd place: Bruce Discher / Tom Fahland (split)

  • Sho's victory this week is his 8th this year, in 30 tournaments. Jason Lee has four, while Bruce Haight has won three outright and split for first twice.

The magic number seems to be 10. The question as always is, can we reach 10 players? This week, the answer is no.

    Tournament Finals Analysis

Jason Lee recorded the match between Sho and Osman. Sho took the transcript and loaded it into GNU, where it could be analyzed. Here is the analysis of the finals using GNU.

We may try to record more tournament matches in the future!

Player of the Month for July 2004

Sho Sengoku is the BCSD Player of the Month for July 2004. Sho has now won three consecutive Player of the Month Awards. This month, Sho only placed in two tournaments, but he won them both. Tom Fahland placed in all four tournaments in July -- winning one and splitting for third place in the other three for a total of 13 points.

Here are the top point getters for each month this year:

    Current Master Points Standings

     1. Sho Sengoku 82

It's turning into a runaway, as Sho has opened up a 25 point lead on the competition. Sho could just about take a month off and be guaranteed to still hold the top spot.

The point leader at the end of the year will be named the BCSD Player of the Year, and the top 16 in the Master Point standings will be invited to the 2004 BCSD Tournament of Champions, to be held in early 2005.

    Problem of the Week

Here's a position from a BCSD tournament match between Osman Guner (Black) and Sho Sengoku (White) on 6 July 2004. We previously failed to give the match score between the two players, which is included now.

No new problem this week, but check back next week.
